Our Schools
Cheshire East and Cheshire West & Chester are home to a wide range of successful, inclusive schools. Learn more about their structure, performance, and commitment to excellence in education.

Cheshire East
Cheshire East is home to a total of 155 educational establishments, comprising 123 primary schools, 25 secondary schools, 6 special schools, and 1 standalone nursery school. Our primary schools vary significantly in size and serve a diverse range of communities—from rural villages to areas facing social and economic challenges.
Currently, 64% of primary schools have converted to academy status. The majority of secondary schools have also transitioned to academies. Our six special schools include two community special schools, two special academies, and two special free schools.
Across the borough, the vast majority of primary, secondary, and special schools have received positive Ofsted inspection outcomes, reflecting a strong commitment to delivering high-quality education. These outcomes highlight the effectiveness of school curriculums and the strength of leadership across Cheshire East.
Cheshire West
There are currently 160 schools across the borough serving the areas of Chester, Ellesmere Port, Winsford and Northwich as well as a number of locality schools. Our primary schools vary greatly in size, serving a wide range of communities, from rural villages, inner and outer city, along with areas of higher social need. Approximately a third of primary schools (34%) have converted to academy status, with 24 Multi Academy Trusts supporting within the locality. There are also two ‘free’ schools in the primary sector, and one further primary school in development, due to open in September 2026.
Our two PRU (pupil referral unit) schools work across three sites, supporting the provision of education for our young people with either medical or behavioural needs and they are equally supported by our specialist schools, of which there are 10 in total, two of whom are academies. Of the 22 schools which make up the secondary sector, over half (59%) of these are now academies, either standalone or as part of a Multi Academy Trust.
We have a range of maintained, faith, foundation, independent and free schools within the borough, including our international and studio schools, ensuring we have a diverse and inclusive educational offering across the borough.
